Granma

The property market in Granma: Bayamo, Manzanillo and the Sierra Maestra

Two historic cities, a plain crossed by the Cauto river and a rural mountain range: a low-price market with many family transfers.

Granma has two cities that hold almost the whole market. Bayamo, the capital, is one of the first towns founded in Cuba and keeps a quiet centre, with a pedestrian boulevard and traditional houses, surrounded by more modern neighbourhoods. It is a modest urban market with low prices and mostly local demand.

Manzanillo, on the Gulf of Guacanayabo, is the second city: a port with eclectic architecture in the centre, timber houses in some neighbourhoods and an urban life of its own. Its prices are among the lowest of any Cuban city its size.

The rest of the province is rural: the Cauto river plain, with its flood risk, and the Sierra Maestra, with hard-to-reach villages and very simple housing. The southern coast, from Niquero to Pilón, is particularly exposed to hurricanes.

As across the east, emigration means a significant share of transactions are sales and gifts within the family, or purchases paid for from abroad for a relative who stays.
