Las Tunas
The property market in Las Tunas: the balcony of the East
One of the most affordable markets in the country, with an orderly capital, the coast of Puerto Padre and many towns built around a sugar mill.
Las Tunas is the gateway to eastern Cuba and one of its most affordable markets. The provincial capital is an orderly mid-sized city, with single-storey houses in the centre and later blocks of flats and homes on the outskirts.
Puerto Padre, on its bay on the northern coast, is the province’s second market: a quiet town with a traditional centre and nearby beaches, such as La Herradura and Covarrubias, that add some holiday demand.
Much of the province grew up around sugar mills, and that left a mark on its housing: mill towns with houses originally built for the workers, whose legal status is not always that of a personal home with its own title. Before buying in one of these towns, check that the house belongs to the seller and is not linked to an entity.
As across the east, emigration in recent years has multiplied family transfers, and with them inheritances still waiting to be adjudicated.
